From the Mists of Time: “Looker”

January 7, 2014

Looker_imp

Welcome back to “From the Mists of Time,” and boy, do we have a doozy today. It’s a strange, largely unknown little gem from 1981 called Looker. Why review this movie, you ask? Well, kinda because I created this while FTMOT subcategory and I feel like I should populate it with something, so it doesn’t end up like my “What Went Wrong” category (with five years before a second installment).  Besides, this movie is a great time capsule of the ‘80s. It’s got that ubiquitous SoCal setting (usually some producer or other’s beachfront pad that he’d just shooed the underage hookers out of), totally unnecessary sports cars, plastic surgery, and vapid, Barbie doll blondes. Hell, throw in a hot tub and some blow, and you pretty much have the early ‘80s in a nutshell.

1982, Best Summer Ever: “Tron”

July 30, 2012

Yeah, this is basically a repost of my “Tron Reconsidered” review that I wrote in anticipation of Tron: Legacy in 2010. I know, I know, I’m lazy, but c’mon–it’s Tron for fuck’s sake. The movie doesn’t exactly have layers…

I mean, c’mon…we have a movie in which the world of computers is envisioned as a hyper-colored landscape peopled by dudes in glowey costumes with the faces of their programmers and/or users. I mean, how much fucking acid to you have to drop to take this premise seriously?

Gunmonkey Presents: THE 13 WORST FILMS OF 2008!!!

January 4, 2009

mark_wahlberg__zooey_deschanel_the_happening_movie_image1Yeah, I’m a little late on this one—sue me. I was stuck someplace without any Internet connection for the better part of a week. Anyway, it’s the beginning of 2009, so let’s take a quick look back at the worst damage cinema has inflicted on us in the last year. I’ve tried to play by some rules with this list—they have to be films I’ve seen (I’ve heard that Uwe Boll’s Postal is so bad it causes catatonia in people with IQs higher than Sarah Palin’s, but alas I’ve not yet endured it), and they have to have come out in 2008. I try to keep things simple. So without further ado, The Worst Films (I’ve seen) of 2008!

The Internet, and Why It Wants to Kill You: Untraceable”

June 2, 2008

Oh that rascally Internets! That malevolent series of tubes (not, I repeat not, a truck!) which helps you wile away the hours of your life shopping, dating, paying bills, catching up with news, and…MURDER! At least that what the good and not-terribly-Internet-savvy folks who made Untraceable would have you believe. See, in their view the Internet has not only made us more connected, it has also made us into serial killers and the ghouls who live vicariously through them. Read the rest of this entry ?
